Are you considering professional hair removal services from a medical spa? If so, it is important to know that the actual removal of hair itself is only part of the process. How you care for your skin after hair removal makes a huge difference in achieving silky smooth skin. A medical spa technician will discuss personalized aftercare guidelines during your appointment. That being said, knowing and preparing beforehand can make for a better experience overall.
How to care for your skin after hair removal treatments
Although there are many approaches to hair removal, general aftercare is similar for most treatments. Common treatments offered by medical spas include waxing, threading, and laser hair removal. Following the tips below will help lead to better results with each of these methods. These tips may also help minimize redness, irritation, swelling, and strawberry legs from clogged pores, among other side effects.
Avoid tanning
Avoid all forms of tanning for the first few days after professional hair removal, including sunbathing, tanning beds, and tanning sprays. How long the patient should avoid tanning depends on the hair removal type. For waxing and threading, the patient only needs to stay away from UV radiation for 24 to 48 hours. With laser hair removal, patients may need to avoid tanning for about two weeks after each session. Note that laser hair removal takes place through a series of appointments.
Swap out scented lotions and products
Do not apply perfumed or scented products to the treated area to avoid irritation after any hair removal. Examples include scented lotions, scented body soaps, perfume and body sprays, and deodorant. Many patients find it helpful to use antiseptic products to clean and moisturize the area. However, fragrance-free soap or lotion should work just as well.
Exfoliate with care
Exfoliating before and after any hair removal may prevent ingrown hairs. That said, exfoliating too much or too soon after hair removal will likely irritate the skin and potentially cause ingrown hairs. Wait at least two to three days after waxing or laser hair removal to exfoliate the skin.
Take cool or lukewarm showers
Bathing in hot water can irritate the skin. After hair removal, this increases the chances of swelling and irritation. Opt for a cool or lukewarm shower for the first 24 to 48 hours to soothe the skin.
Keep the area as clean as possible
Keeping the skin clean and dry after hair removal is important. That means no tight clothing after hair removal treatment for a day or two. Instead, opt for loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that covers the area. (This may not be possible for some areas, such as the face.) Waiting at least 24 hours to exercise is also recommended to prevent strawberry legs (clogged hair follicles) due to sweat.
Ready to ditch razors?
Professional hair removal services allow patients to ditch shaving for good. Waxing, threading, laser hair removal, and other professional services often provide silkier, smoother skin than shaving can on its own. Schedule an appointment at our medical spa today to learn more.
